Councillor Carl Thomas

Representing the Hawthorn and Lower Rhydyfelin Ward

Bio

I was born and have lived in various parts of Pontypridd all of my life. These include the Common, Cilfynydd, Coed-y-Cwm, and Ynysybwl, but I’m now proud to call Hawthorn my home for the past 5 years, where I also went to secondary school at Hawthorn High. I've been married for 19 years and have 2 sons, 18 and 14 years old, plus a dog called Stitch and a cat named Belle.

My day job is as a Solution Architect for a global workforce management software company, where I get to travel and meet a vast array of people in a wide range of businesses across the world, although my career started off 25 years ago filling shelves in the old Somerfield store in Taff Street, where I progressed through the ranks to their Head Office and on to where I am now.

In addition to serving as a Town Councillor for the Hawthorn ward, I am also the Vice Chair of the Hawthorn Neighbourhood Watch, Treasurer of the Rhydyfelin Community Group, Secretary of the Alexon Way Residents Association, LEA Governor at Hawthorn High School, as well as a member of the committee of Hawthorn Community Centre. I serve as the Town Council's representative as a governor at Hawthorn Primary School where I am also the Chair of Governors.  I am also the Chair of Trustees of Pontypridd Children's Book Festival.

I love to go to the cinema and eat out with my family as films and food are both something I enjoy. I try to be active and healthy by running, and have completed several races over the last few years as well finishing 2 half marathons. During my year as Pontypridd Mayor in 2021/2022, I was proud to represent the Town Council and raise money for my chosen charities of £4200 donated to Velindre Cancer Centre, Help for Heroes and Pontypridd Foodbank, which included running the London Marathon virtually around Pontypridd.
