As part of the senior management group, you will have oversight of the Council’s asset portfolio, introduce structure, planning and control. In addition, you will deliver maintenance and improvement works, manage contractors and ancillary support staff and ensure buildings, open spaces and allotments are safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

Pontypridd Town Council’s Christmas Cracker Returns!

Pontypridd Town Council, in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, is delighted to announce the return of the Christmas Cracker event on Friday, November 21st , from 4.30pm to 7.30pm .

This much-loved annual celebration will feature children’s fairground rides, live entertainment, market stalls, and festive music presented by local radio station GTFM. The event offers a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors alike to come together and enjoy the start of the Christmas season in the heart of Pontypridd.

In addition, Santa’s Grotto will once again be hosted at Pontypridd Museum on Saturday, December 6th, 13th and 20th from 11am to 3pm . Entry to the grotto is free, with voluntary donations to the Mayor’s charity gratefully received.

Pontypridd Town Council looks forward to welcoming the community for an evening of festive fun and celebration.

Pontypridd Museum Awarded Funding for Major Renovation Projects

Pontypridd Museum has been awarded two Welsh Government grants to undertake major renovation projects on the site.

The museum, which is managed by Pontypridd Town Council, will receive a total of £300k in funding attached to the Welsh Government’s Priorities for Culture programme.

A grant of £150k will enable the restoration, conservation and digitisation of the museum’s largest object, the 1910 Conacher Pipe Organ, on permanent display in the former Welsh Baptist Tabernacl Chapel, now Pontypridd Museum.

The organ was last fully overhauled in 1988 and is currently in a very poor state of repair and practically unplayable. The grant will allow the repair of all parts of the organ and introduce a digital control so that a recital can be recorded and played back to visitors without an organist being present. This currently happens in just a few of the world’s leading venues such as the Palau de la Música in Barcelona and in the UK the famous organs of Canterbury Cathedral and York Minster.

Work will start on the project this Autumn with the aim of the organ being fully restored and operational by March 1, 2026, in time for the annual Mayor’s St David’s Day Concert.

A further grant has been awarded to repair the leaking roof of the museum store and community rooms. The building repairs will protect the museum’s reserve collections, a key community asset and will enable the museum to sustain its role as a hub for wellbeing, creativity, and social cohesion through the continued use of the community rooms, which host a variety of free activities and are regularly used by local groups to host events and activities.

The renovation of the outdoor space around the roof will revitalise the viewing platform for the world-famous Pontypridd Bridge, which also includes a picnic area and garden and the starting stone for Pontypridd’s Mab Trail , which celebrates Wales’ ancient myths and legends.

Nigel Blackamore, Pontypridd Museum Business and Partnerships Manager said,

'The Conacher Pipe Organ is more than an instrument—it’s the beating heart of our museum and a living link to Pontypridd’s rich musical heritage. Restoring it will not only revive its powerful presence but also reconnect generations through sound, memory, and innovation. With the power of digital technology and the craftsmanship of expert organ builders, we’re ensuring this iconic object doesn’t fade into silence, but sings once again for our community and the world.'

Pontypridd Town Council Leader, Cllr. Lynda Davies said,

‘The award of the Welsh Government grants is fantastic news for Pontypridd Museum and for Pontypridd. The renovation projects will allow the museum to continue hosting cultural, educational, and wellbeing activities and will strengthen its role as a vibrant hub for local heritage and community life.

This builds on the work already ongoing at the museum, and forms part of Pontypridd Town Council’s extensive wider cultural projects and partnerships. Nigel and his team are doing fantastic work in revitalising and developing Pontypridd Museum, ensuring it remains a vital asset for our community.’

Work will begin on both projects this Autumn and updates will be posted to Pontypridd Town Council and Pontypridd Museum websites and social media.

We are extremely sorry to announce that the planned planetarium for Friday 22 ^nd and Saturday 23 ^rd August must be postponed due to serious illness within the Planetarium Company. We have re-arranged the event for the following week, Friday 29 ^th and Saturday 30 ^th August. We have contacted everyone who has booked a space at the event to inform them of the postponement. If they are not able to attend the alternative dates a full refund will be issued through the Eventbrite page.

Meet Pontypridd's New Mayor - Cllr. Carol Morgan

Councillor Carol Morgan was elected Pontypridd Town Mayor on May 22nd 2025 at the Annual General Meeting of Pontypridd Town Council. She succeeds Councillor Desmond Paul, who served as Mayor from 2023.

Councillor Morgan represents the Upper Rhydyfelin and Glyntaff ward and is a member of the Welsh Labour group.

Councillor Aminur Kabid, who represents the Treforest ward, will serve as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor's Statement
I feel very honoured and privileged to have been elected to the position of Pontypridd Town Council Mayor for 2025-2026.

I was born and brought up in Rhydyfelin Pontypridd. I married in 1968 and moved to England in 1970 due to my husband’s work commitments. On retirement in 2004, I returned to Pontypridd. I was involved with the Rhydyfelin Community Centre for many years and I am still part of the Rhydyfelin community group.

My main priorities as Mayor are to serve the community to the best of my ability and to raise as much money as possible for my chosen charities, Velindre Cancer Centre and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. I regard both hospitals as extremely important to the community as a whole, particularly having personal experience of the highly professional care offered to me by the staff at CCU.

I look forward to representing Pontypridd over the next 12 months as the town Mayor.

First Ever Pontypridd Brass Band Festival to take place this May in partnership with Pontypridd Town Council

A new festival celebrating the South Wales Valleys’ rich brass band traditions is taking place in multiple locations across Pontypridd town centre this May.

Organised by the Pontypridd Brass Band Festival team, in partnership with Pontypridd Town Council, the Pontypridd Brass Band Festival will present a varied programme including a learner workshop, outdoor and indoor performances, a music-themed exhibition, a film night and an opportunity to come and try out a range of brass instruments from the smallest to the largest.

The festival will officially kick-off Pontypridd Town Council’s summer-long Tymor yr Haf season, with events taking place throughout the area from May - August.

Festival fringe events will begin with The Siglo Section, an 18-piece powerhouse revitalising the big band tradition, who will be performing on Sunday May 11 at Clwb y Bont. A screening of the much-loved film, ‘Brassed Off’ will follow on Thursday May 15 at the same venue.

The festival itself will begin on Saturday May 17, showcasing a range of brass bands from across South Wales. The Band of the Prince of Wales, composed of musicians from the Royal Corps of Army Music lead the way with a learners workshop in the morning followed by a lunchtime concert with the learners in St. Catherine’s Church.

Music will ring out across the town throughout the day with events at multiple venues including Clwb y Bont, the iconic Bandstand in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park and the Mill Street Quarter. Bands performing include Mid Rhondda, Parc and Dare, Crosskeys Silver, City of Cardiff M2 and Cathays Brass.

Local composer Dave Collins has written a new fanfare to ‘Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau’, to mark the 120th anniversary of the national anthem’s first performance at a rugby match. The new fanfare will feature in some bands’ performances during the day.

Anyone thinking of getting into playing brass can pop into Pontypridd Museum in the afternoon where there will be an opportunity to try out a full range of instruments with tutors from local bands as well as staff from RCT Music Service. All ages are welcome.

Information on where learner bands are based and when they meet as well as contacts for bands looking for older players to come back to banding and start playing again will also be available.

The Festival closes in the evening with a special finale concert at Pontypridd Museum when PITBrass presents, ‘An evening with Bond’. Prepare to be shaken, and stirred!

Chair of the Pontypridd Brass Band Festival organsing team Julian Boyce said,

“We’re excited to bring this new festival to Pontypridd. We hope that the bands enjoy performing and visitors to the town enjoy listening too. As a team, we hope to build on the legacy of the Eisteddfod and bring even more music and entertainment to the town.’

The festival’s artwork, including its logo, festival poster and map of festival events and venues has been created by local artist Becky Davies.

Most events are free to attend, with tickets for the Siglo Section concert costing £12 and the screening of ‘Brassed Off’ costing £4.

A Summer-long extravaganza for all the family!

Residents throughout Pontypridd will have plenty to enjoy this Summer, with a jam-packed series of fun-filled events and activities for all ages provided by Pontypridd Town Council.

Building on the success of last year’s Tymor yr Haf - Summer Season, this year’s programme is the Town Council’s biggest and boldest yet with a wide variety of activities, events and entertainment lined up all across Pontypridd from May to August.

The Tymor yr Haf programme will visit communities across Pontypridd and take place

in several venues throughout the area including Pontypridd Museum, Meadow Street Community Garden, and the Taff Meadow and Graig community centres.

Working with the Pontypridd Brass Band Festival team, Tymor yr Haf kicks off with a Festival of Brass in May, with learner workshops, a full programme of both outdoor and indoor concerts, a music themed exhibition, a film night and an opportunity to come and try out a range of brass instruments from the smallest to the largest.

The first ever Tymor yr Haf Roadshow, packed with activities for all the family along with fantastic local entertainment will travel the area during both the May half-term and the school Summer holidays in July and August, visiting communities across Pontypridd.

Pontypridd Museum’s popular family arts and craft activities return for the school holidays, with free sessions running throughout the Summer.

During August, Pontypridd Museum, Meadow Street Community Garden, Taff Meadow and Graig community centres are hosting a variety of daytime and evening events, including music and talks, featuring a wealth of well-known Welsh talent and celebrating local artists, musicians, historians and raconteurs with something for everyone to enjoy.

A Royal Visit to Meadow Street Community Garden

Meadow Street Community Garden Welcomes the Prince and Princess of Wales

Volunteers and Staff at Pontypridd Town Council’s Meadow Street Community Garden were pleased to welcome some special visitors to the site ahead of St David’s day. The Prince and Princess of Wales came to Pontypridd on a visit which also saw them making Welsh cakes in the market and meeting those affected by December’s flooding.

The Royal Couple visited Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland, which aims to create a safe and welcoming place where the local community can come together and enjoy the benefits of nature. Our team of volunteers gave a tour of the site, during which the Prince and Princess heard about how the garden came into being and its significance to the local community. They heard about the impact of the recent flooding and how the volunteers came together in the aftermath to regenerate the space.

Helen Williams, Pontypridd Town Council’s Community Development Officer said,

“What an experience welcoming William and Kate to Pontypridd Town Council‘s Meadow Street Community! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for all involved. They spent time walking around the site talking to the volunteers and recognised their dedication and contribution to the community and to the recovery work after the flooding.

“They spent time talking with young people, tested their cooking skills in the roundhouse with Coed Lleol and had the opportunity to sit in one of our new sculptures, which will form part of our new nature trail. We hope that this visit will draw more attention to this wonderful site that has been transformed into a place for the community, nature and wellbeing.”

Meadow Street Community Garden is open for visitors on Wednesday, Thursday 10am -4pm and Sunday 10am-2pm. Please get in touch if you’d like to join our team of volunteers and support us to maintain this community site.

Celebrate Christmas with Pontypridd Town Council

Join in the festive fun in Pontypridd town centre this Christmas with a host of free events and activities organised by Pontypridd Town Council.

Kick off the Christmas celebrations with Pontypridd Town Council’s Christmas Cracker on Friday November 22, from 4.30pm - 7.30pm.

Organised by Pontypridd Town Council in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, the event will feature children's fairground rides, children’s entertainers, market stalls and live music with radio station GTFM.

Local school children from Ysgol Bro Taf and Ysgol Awel Taf along with Pontypridd Community Choir will lead a Lantern Parade at 6pm through the town centre before the winners of Pontypridd Town Council’s schools Christmas card competition will switch on the Christmas lights at the main stage on Taff Street at 6.30pm.

Ahead of the lights switch-on event, children’s Christmas lantern making workshops are taking place in Pontypridd Museum on Saturday, November 9 and Saturday, November 16 from 12pm – 2pm. All workshop participants are invited to join the lantern parade on switch-on day.

The Christmas cheer continues, with further events planned by Pontypridd Town Council throughout the festive season.

A wreath-making workshop is taking place at Pontypridd Museum on Friday, November 15 from 6pm - 8pm. The workshop is £25 and includes all wreath-making materials and two drinks.

Pontypridd Museum will be home to Santa’s Grotto in the run-up to Christmas, with the Grotto open on Saturday, November 30, Saturday, December 7 and Saturday, December 14 from 11am - 3pm. Entry to the grotto is free, with donations to the Mayor’s charity welcomed.

I’m Councillor Desmond Paul, the new mayor elected by my fellow town councillors for 2024 -2025. I’m happy to say that my wife Anoma Paul has agreed to become Mayor Consort for the year. I’m thrilled and feel very privileged to be elected.

I’m originally from Sri Lanka, and I worked as a Flight Lieutenant in the Air Force.

I’m supporting two charities as Mayor, the Velindre Cancer Centre and as I’m a veteran of the Air Force, I will be supporting the Taff Ely Veterans Group.

I’m going to do whatever I can to leave a legacy from my time as Mayor.

Graig Community Centre Reopening

Come and be a part of the Graig Community Centre

Come and take part in a special series of events organised by the Pontypridd Town Council to mark the reopening of Graig Community Centre.

Community Partnership organisations are invited to view the renovated facilities on offer at an open day on Thursday April 25th between 10am to 1pm.

On Saturday, April 27th a free family fun day is taking place at the centre, with a host of activities on offer for everyone. Pontypridd radio station GTFM will be providing entertainment and broadcasting from the event and Growing Space Pontypridd will be putting on nature-based activities, encouraging learning through play. Sports, family games and refreshments will also be on offer.

Graig Community Centre’s family day takes place from 10am to 1pm and entrance is free.

A volunteer drop-in session is taking place from 4pm to 6pm on Monday, 29th April and on Saturday, 9th May a Wellbeing Morning will take place from 11am - 1pm, in partnership with RCT Together and Interlink.

Graig Community Centre will be open for bookings from May onwards. Bookings can be made by contacting Pontypridd Town Council.

Newly Refurbished Graig Community Centre Reopens

A special series of events will mark the reopening of the Graig Community Centre

Councillor Jayne Brencher , Mayor of Pontypridd, Councillor Desmond Paul and Councillor Eleri Griffiths.

Graig Community Centre will reopen at the end of this month following an extensive refurbishment to make it a welcoming and accessible place for all.

Pontypridd Town Council took over the running of Graig Community Centre in January this year, signing a 21 year lease for the building.

The community centre has been closed for several years and Pontypridd Town Council has plans to transform its future use with a wide-range of community-focussed activities, in keeping with Pontypridd Town Council’s vision to improve the lives, health and well-being of everyone who lives and works in Pontypridd.

The town council secured funding from the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund – RCT Community Fund to carry out key renovations to the building.

A special series of events organised by the town council will take place to mark the reopening, including a free family community event.

A special visit by Pontypridd’s Mayor, Councillor Desmond Paul and Councillors Jayne Brencher and Eleri Griffiths, who represent the Graig area took place last week to recognise officially the completion of the renovation works.

Councillor Jayne Brencher said, “The Graig Community centre is finally reopening after much needed refurbishment and local residents are thrilled to have this vital facility back at its heart.

We are excited to re-engage with residents and local groups to provide a safe space for young families, older residents and young people with events celebrating the people of the Graig. It's your centre! We are listening.”

Councillor Eleri Griffiths said, “It's wonderful that Pontypridd Town Council has been able to reopen the centre and is investing in the Graig community.

“I look forward to seeing the centre flourish and hope it will be a focal point for activities once again. I am keen to see something for everyone from the youngest to the eldest members of the community, and look forward to getting involved with the plans for the future.”

The local community is encouraged to be involved in the centre and to shape its future in partnership with Pontypridd Town Council.

A concert for St. David's Day!

A St. David's Day celebration at Pontypridd Museum.

Join us on the evening of March 1st at Pontypridd Museum and celebrate with an evening of music and song!

Transforming the former bingo hall site in the heart of Pontypridd

Important development work will commence on Monday, February 5, at the former Pontypridd bingo hall site.

The project will provide a quality public realm area – acting as a clear arrival point at the southern end of the town centre. The open space will include clear way-finding signs and visitor information, seating areas, and areas of greenery and planting. A small food/drink outlet will also be included on the site in the future.

The site will provide a safe pedestrian route from Sardis Road into the town centre – well-located for train users arriving in Pontypridd. The new bus bays will be positioned on the site’s boundary with Sardis Road, and a separate seating area will also be provided for bus users.

The new bus bays are being prioritised for delivery in time for Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taf to host the National Eisteddfod for Wales in August 2024.

Graig Community Centre Given New Lease of Life by Pontypridd Town Council

The running of Graig Community Centre is to be taken over by Pontypridd Town Council, after a 21 year lease for the building was signed by the council at the beginning of the month.

The community centre has been closed for several years and the town council hopes to transform its future use with a wide-range of community-focussed plans in-keeping with Pontypridd Town Council’s vision to improve the lives, health and well-being of everyone who lives and works in Pontypridd.

The centre will offer the community of the Graig a place to connect and socialise, with many events and activities throughout the year, including friendship groups, community coffee mornings and advice sessions along with youth and children’s activities also. The local community is encouraged to be involved in the centre and its facilities will be available for booking.

Pontypridd Town Council Leader, Simon Pritchard said,

‘We are thrilled to get to work on re-establishing Graig Community Centre as the heart of the community. There was a strong desire from the community and local councillors to re-open the centre when it became available from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council as an asset transfer, and over the past 2 years we’ve been working towards making this possible.

‘We encourage the local community to join us in being a part of the centre, and to become Graig Community Connectors. This will involve as little or as much time as you can spare to help with activities from making tea and coffee to befriending residents that attend the community centre. We’re really looking forward to seeing you all!’

Happy New Year from all at Pontypridd Town Council!

As we enter 2024, I’ll begin by reflecting on the last 12 months here at Pontypridd Town Council. It has been another busy year, with many significant and positive developments.

We have enjoyed many community-focussed events and activities in the Meadow Street Community Garden in Treforest, which continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated staff and much-valued volunteers.

Meadow Street has won two prestigious awards this year, the Social Farms & Gardens Community Land Advisory Service (CLAS) award for its management of community green spaces and Keep Wales Tidy’s Green Flag Community Award in recognition of its high environmental standards, cleanliness, safety, and community involvement. Meadow Street Community is also currently in the middle of a 2 year grant funded programme that will allow us to develop the site further and expand on the activities and events on offer.

It’s been a big year for Pontypridd Museum, with an all-new team steering us through an exciting period of development. The museum has welcomed large numbers of children and schools to the venue, along with providing intergenerational activity as well as a variety of events and exhibitions. We also saw the re-opening of the museum shop, a must-visit for locals and visitors alike. A programme of new exhibitions and further activities is planned for the coming year.

In May we welcomed a new town Mayor - Councillor Desmond Paul. You can find out more about the Mayor and all of our elected representatives by visiting Pontypridd Town Council’s website.

Following extensive community consultation, Pontypridd Town Council’s first Forward Development Plan was published in July. The plan sets out our goals for the years up to the next election in 2027. Thank you to everyone who took the time to take part - a copy of the plan can be found on our website.

Pontypridd Town Council has enjoyed bringing the community together for several large events throughout the year. The Children’s Storytelling Festival in May saw youngsters from the area enjoying a feast of fabulous fiction, including a theatrical performance of the Mabinogion and a wonderful event with the authors of The Mab, the book that our very own Mab Trail is based on.

In August, we all gathered in Ynysangharad Park on a (mostly!) sunny day to enjoy our annual Summer Fun Day and vintage transport rally. And more recently, Pontypridd’s children (along with many grown ups too!) enjoyed our Christmas Cracker and Christmas lights switch on event along with a visit to Santa in his grotto at Pontypridd Museum.

We are all facing difficult times currently, as the cost of living crisis and household energy worries continue. I would like to give a friendly reminder that we are on hand to offer advice and a friendly ear to all our residents. The weekly Monday Meet Up and the monthly Community Cuppa will be back in 2024, with the first Community Cuppa taking place on January 2nd.

2024 promises to be a vibrant year for Pontypridd. We’re immensely looking forward to welcoming the National Eisteddfod in August and the Town Council will continue to deliver valued projects and events for our community throughout the year.

Green Flag flying at Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland

Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.

Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland in Treforest has achieved the coveted Green Flag Community Award in recognition of its high environmental standards, cleanliness, safety, and community involvement.

The land on Meadow Street in Treforest lay unattended and overgrown for almost 8 years, before being re-acquired by Pontypridd Town Council. At the beginning of 2021, work began in earnest to clear the space that was also severely impacted by flooding from Storm Dennis.

Two years on, Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland is thriving and provides a safe and welcoming place where people from all walks of life can come and enjoy the benefits of nature, homegrown produce and have opportunities to share and learn new skills.

Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland aims to engage with the residents of Pontypridd in activities that support health and wellbeing, by empowering people through knowledge, skills, and experiences. It is hoped that the space will inspire people to enjoy green spaces and nature, increasing their access and enjoyment of the local environment.

Dawn Parker, Meadow Street Community Garden’s Volunteer Coordinator said,

“We’re delighted to be awarded a Green Flag Award. This award is in recognition of all the hard work undertaken by staff and volunteers and the commitment from Pontypridd Town Council and partners and the wider community. We are grateful for the recognition and hope this will enable us to continue to thrive and provide a vital green space for the health and wellbeing of the community and nature.”

180 community managed green spaces across the country have met the high standards needed to receive the Green Flag Community Award.

Now in its third decade, Green Flag recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world.

In Wales, the awards scheme is run by Keep Wales Tidy. Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said,

“Free access to safe, high quality green space has never been more important. Our award-winning sites play a vital role in people’s mental and physical well-being, providing a haven for communities to come together, relax and enjoy nature.

“News that a record number of community managed green spaces in Wales have achieved Green Flag status is testament to the dedication and hard work of hundreds of volunteers. We’re delighted to be able to celebrate their success on the world stage.”

Pontypridd Town Council Launches Blueprint for the Future to Serve Community Better

Pontypridd Town Council has launched its first Forward Development Plan, a set of actions designed to improve the lives, health and well-being of everyone who lives and works in Pontypridd.

The Forward Development Plan was created with the priorities of the local community at its heart. It is a collaborative effort between town councillors and town council staff, Pontypridd residents, and community groups and sets out common goals that the Town Council aims to achieve over the coming 4 years, ahead of the next local elections in 2027.

Between August 2022 and April 2023, the Town Council held meetings to discuss the plan with hundreds of individuals and community groups. The council asked individuals to suggest projects and issues they would like to see included.

The Forward Development Plan concentrates on 5 key areas, known as the 5 Pillars:

Pillar 1: The Town Council will be a well-run, accessible and inclusive organisation.

Pillar 2: Focus on People and Community at the Heart of the Town Council’s Work.

Pillar 3: Improve our Environment and Biodiversity.

Pillar 4: Encourage and Fund Events, Culture and Arts that Promote Well-being.

Pillar 5: Continue to Invest in the Regeneration of Our Town and Surrounding Communities.

The Forward Development Plan does not exist in isolation. It is influenced by other plans and legislation such as the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act 2015, Cwm Taf Morgannwg’s Well-being Plan and RCT’s Corporate Plan.

The plan will be reviewed annually – the findings of which will be published each year to enable residents to see what has been achieved and what is still left to achieve.

Pontypridd Town Council Chief Executive and Town clerk, Tony Graham said,

‘ I am delighted to present Pontypridd Town Council’s first Forward Development Plan for the period 2023-27. The organisation is focused on serving our communities and working for the good of our residents by implementing their ideas and aspirations.

‘We offer this plan as a statement of our intentions for the coming four years. The process is not finished, and we will be reviewing progress annually and regularly inviting comments from all our residents, partners, and stakeholders. We look forward to working together for the good of Pontypridd.’

Accessible Allotment Visit

The glorious summer weather has offered members of a group for people affected by mobility issues a chance to visit Pontypridd Town Council's accessible allotment at Berw Field, Trallwn.

The allotment is the first of its kind in Pontypridd and features accessible raised beds, wheelchair- friendly widened pathways and a compost toilet.

Group regulars, Vikki and Tim Leader joined volunteer Carol Baker on the allotment plot that she helped to create back in 2022. It is hoped that the group will become regular visitors to the allotment and take the opportunity to garden as well as enjoy the river views and relaxing atmosphere.

The group for people affected by mobility issues meets at Pontypridd Museum the first Tuesday of every month at 1.30pm.

Meet Pontypridd's New Mayor - Cllr. Desmond Paul

Councillor Desmond Paul was elected Pontypridd Town Mayor on May 18th 2023 at the Annual General Meeting of Pontypridd Town Council. Desmond represents the Treforest Ward and is a member of the Welsh Labour group.

Congratulations on your new role. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Councillor Desmond Paul, the new mayor elected by my fellow town councillors for 2023 - 2024. I’m happy to say that my wife Anoma Paul has agreed to become Mayor Consort for the year. I’m thrilled and feel very privileged to be elected. I’m originally from Sri Lanka, and I worked as a Flight Lieutenant in the Air Force. When I first moved to the United Kingdom, I lived in London, and worked as a chief Security officer for British Airways. I have a large family, and my one sister was living in Wales. I always found time to visit her, I liked walking around everywhere and I liked the people I met. Eventually she convinced me to come and live here. I started my own business in Treforest - Desmond’s Newsagents, which I ran for 35 years. That’s why everybody in Treforest and Pontypridd knows me! Now that I'm retired, it's brought me more spare time. And I thought, ‘well, I’ve got more time now, so I'm going to give my full support to the Town Council and to the people of Pontypridd, Treforest and all the communities around here.’

You’ve been a Pontypridd Town Councillor for many years, but tell us something about you that people may not know?

Before I emigrated to the United Kingdom, I was the Commanding Officer in charge of re-establishing the Sri Lankan Air force operational division in Koggala. I was given three years to re-establish the base, that was abandoned after the Second World War, but I completed it in two years.

What are your priorities as Mayor?

I want to do something significant to help the community. I’m supporting 3 charities as Mayor. First, I want to do something to help end homelessness in the area, to help all those who are vulnerable, young and old to have a better life. So I’m supporting the homelessness charity The Wallich. I’m also supporting the MND Association, a charity that helps people with motor neurone disease. I particularly want to support this charity as my cousin Ramesh Vethanayagam has recently been diagnosed, he is only sixty years old and is now in a wheelchair. So raising as much as possible and to be able to donate something to that charity is a priority. My third charity is Cerebral Palsy Cymru, and that is in support of my grandson Isaac Paul. My son has twins who were born prematurely, and Isaac has had a lot of complications. He’s been helped a lot by this charity, who have helped to improve his health.

Also, as I’m a veteran of the Air Force, I will be supporting the Armed Forces veterans. I'm an active member of Valley Veterans RCT and the Royal Welsh Veterans, Caerphilly branch and I will do whatever I can to support veterans as well as my main charities. I’m going to do whatever I can to leave a legacy from my time as Mayor. I'm so proud to be the first Sri Lankan Mayor of Pontypridd.

DIG FOR VICTORY!

WW2 Pillbox Preserved for Pontypridd

Pontypridd Town Council is the proud recipient of a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to create WW2- style, ‘Dig for Victory Garden’ at Berw Field allotments. Pontypridd Town Council workers uncovered a pillbox dating from 1940 on the site, which would have been one of many situated along the Taff Valley in preparation from possible invasion by Germany during the Second World War.

It is hoped that the pillbox and the garden will be visited by schools, community groups and others interested in the history and heritage of Pontypridd for years to come.

Pontypridd Town Council Chief Executive Tony Graham said, “On discovering such an incredible piece of local history we decided to help preserve it and also to use it as an educational aid for future generations. We are passionate about ensuring that the history of our area can be enjoyed by both our local community and visitors from further afield and we hope that people enjoy visiting the site and learning about Pontypridd.”

With the support of the National Lottery Players, Pontypridd Town Council has been able to create a Dig for Victory Garden, install an Anderson shelter, and build a ty bach (outhouse) at Berw Field allotments. The pillbox is one of very few along the Taff that survive which makes it of important historical interest.

The project has been funded by the 15-Minute Heritage Fund grant programme which was run by Cadw – the Welsh Government’s historic environment service and The National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales.

THE MAB TRAIL GUIDED TOUR WITH P.G. BELL

Come and discover The Mab Trail, Pontypridd’s very own art and storytelling trail based on The Mab , a retelling of Wales’ ancient stories for today’s young readers, written by 11 of Wales’ finest children’s authors.

Story-finders will be able to seek-out the stories of The Mab scattered throughout the landscape of Pontypridd by following the trail to find story stones and storyboards depicting the 11 tales of the Mabinogi. You can take rubbings of the stones to make your own story books and even create some new myths and legends of your own!

P.G.Bell, author of Geraint, Enid and The Big Knight Fight in The Mab will lead a mini-tour of The Mab Trail, starting in Pontypridd Museum and then on to Ynysangharad Park, where you’ll discover the stories of the women of The Mab.

All ages welcome, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Everyone attending, both children and adults will need to book a ticket.

Struts and Frets Theatre brings to life the classic Welsh tale, The Mabinogion. Through immersive and interactive storytelling, elaborate puppetry and original music, this inventive and enchanting bi-lingual session will follow the legends of Rhiannon, Blodeuwedd, and Pryderi through a time when magic coursed through the Welsh landscape, fantastical tales of giants filled the air, epic battles took place, and wizards cast their spells.

The Mab is a bilingual collection of eleven epic Welsh stories from the Mabinogion , beautifully illustrated and retold for young people. These are the earliest prose stories of Britain and have been hugely influential on storytelling across Europe.The stories in the Mab are strange and funny and thrilling. They speak of a time when the gates between the Real World and the Otherworld were occasionally left open and sometimes, just sometimes, it was possible to step through. A team of fantastic, award-winning authors bring the stories to life - and we’re joined by two of them - Matt Brown and P.G Bell. Hosted by Storyville Books’ Cerith Mathias

Pontypridd Children's Storytelling Festival

Pontypridd Town Council has announced the line-up for a new Children’s Storytelling Festival taking place in Pontypridd Museum and Ynysangharad Park on May 13th with a jam-packed programme of free events filled with fun for all the family!

Pontypridd Children’s Storytelling Festival is part of a series of events hosted by both Pontypridd Town Council and Parti Ponty - A Welsh Language Festival for Everyone, who have come together to host the Creative Pontypridd Creadigol Weekend, taking place from May 12th -13th.

At the heart of the Children’s Storytelling Festival is The Mab Trail, an interactive story trail based on Wales’ oldest myths and legends. The home of the trail is Pontypridd Museum, with a series of permanent story stones and story boards to be found in locations across Pontypridd.

The Mab Trail is based on the tales of The Mab , a popular bilingual book for children, which reimagines the ancient stories of the Mabinogi for today’s young readers. Children and adults alike can follow the trail to discover Wales’ most ancient tales.

As part of the Children’s Storytelling Festival, guided tours of The Mab Trail will be on offer, where trail-goers will be able to take rubbings of the stones, encouraging them to walk the stories of Wales and to create some new ones of their own, inspired by Pontypridd.

There’ll be a chance to meet The Mab and hear from three of the team of fantastic, award-winning authors behind the book, Matt Brown and P.G Bell.

Special live storytelling sessions of Y Mabinogi by Struts and Frets Theatre, will be taking place in Pontypridd Museum. Through immersive and interactive storytelling, elaborate puppetry and original music, the bi-lingual sessions will follow the legends of Rhiannon, Blodeuwedd, and Pryderi through a time when magic coursed through the Welsh landscape, fantastical tales of giants filled the air, epic battles took place, and wizards cast their spells.

Adventure awaits for younger children, with Louby Lou’s Storytelling in the Park and for older children with Pontypridd-based Welsh language author Elidir Jones, who’ll be encouraging participants to create their own fantasy world, full of magic and monsters.

That’s just a flavour of what’s on offer, with more exciting events, arts and crafts activities, and much more.

Pontypridd Town Council's Meadow Street Project Wins Award

Pontypridd Town Council's Meadow Street project has won a Social Farms & Gardens Community Land Advisory Service (CLAS) award for its management of community green spaces.

The Meadow Street Community Garden project, set up by the town council in 2021 has seen an area of disused and overgrown land in Treforest brought back to life as a vibrant garden and creative space for local residents.

The Meadow Street initiative aims to bring people in Pontypridd together to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors in green spaces and nature while helping to create and cultivate a vibrant hub for the community.

Meadow Street Community is one of 15 projects from around Wales being commended by Social Farms & Gardens’ CLAS Awards, which recognise groups and organisations making the best use of land in their communities.

Winners have been presented with a plaque designed by Incredible Edible Porthmadog, made using reclaimed oak.

Meadow Street Community Garden’s Volunteer Coordinator Dawn Parker said,

“We’re incredibly proud to receive this award, which recognises all the hard work and dedication that goes into the Meadow Street Community project.

We’re delighted to see the space go from strength to strength and are incredibly grateful to all our members, our volunteers and everyone who engages with us. Together, we’re creating something very special for Pontypridd.”

Celebrating International Women's Day 2023

March 8th is International Women's Day (IWD), a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also marking a call to action to improve the lives of all women. This year’s campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity

On International Women's Day Pontypridd Town Council celebrates the women making a difference to Pontypridd's community.

Over half of Pontypridd Town Council’s 23 representatives are women.

Here 4 of our councillors tell us what International Women’s Day means to them, explain the importance of getting involved in the community and share who are the women they’re inspired by.

Councillor Lynda Davies, Labour

For me, International Women’s Day gives us the opportunity to remember and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women and girls, past and present, globally and in our own communities, who have fought bravely for the things which we take for granted today. On this day we can unite and shed light on the continued fight for equality and women’s rights for all women and girls everywhere in the world.

Women need to have a voice at every level of representation – to be ‘change makers’ in Parliament, local government and community. Their representation in politics is fundamental to gender equality and genuine democracy – women make up more than half the population so women must be part of decision making and policy making. Women have a different set of lived experiences and perspectives to men and their voice is needed if democracy is to work effectively and women’s causes are to be highlighted and advanced.

I am inspired by the women who have spoken out, taken risks, stood up to be counted, in order to achieve equality. For example, Malala Yousafzai overcame life threatening injuries after an assassination attempt when she was 15 years old. She became a prominent activist for female education. Also, Rosa parks, civil rights activist, who refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. She was arrested and fined. Her bravery in challenging the segregation rules in America in 1956 inspired the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. And of course the Suffragettes who fought incredibly hard to get women the right to vote in the UK, often using extreme tactics to do this. With the outbreak of WWI one of the founders of the movement, Emmeline Pankhurst, encouraged Suffragettes to help with the war effort, taking on the jobs traditionally done by men, earning lots of respect by doing so and showing just how much women contributed to society.

International Women’s Day is a reminder that the situation and status of women worldwide needs specific focus. The fact that we need a day dedicated to women is testament to how unequal and disadvantaged girls and women are. IWD is a platform to draw attention, campaign, understand and support our sisters in their various endeavours to find justice across the world.

Girls and women are the backbone of communities. We are the carers, mothers, daughters and neighbours who often spend our time supporting others. I think that politics and local services improve when girls and women have an equal voice. It is often the case that women are affected differently when political decisions are made. Take the example of a decision to erect a bus stop - research shows that a third more women use buses than men. Having more women in politics leads to improvements on issues that disproportionately affects us and ensures that women’s perspectives are heard when decisions are made.

Jacinda Ardern was inspirational to watch as the world’s youngest Prime Minister, showing it is possible to govern in an inclusive and honest way. I particularly like the way she addressed children directly when she shared information and decisions.

I also admire my mother - who had to leave home at 16 to continue her education, and lived an independent life in the 1950’s challenging the expectations of those around her.

International Women's Day is a chance to reflect on the brilliant achievements of the women of the world. We make up more than half the population but not always half the representation in all aspects of society, not yet anyhow.

Our situation in the UK, while still not perfect, is still miles better than for many of our sisters across the world who day to day face the challenges we conquered years ago. My particular interest is in the franchise, the right to vote.

In New Zealand, women gained the right to vote in 1893, in the UK it took until 1928 for all women over 21 to be able to vote. Switzerland had to wait until 1990 and in Saudi Arabia women were only able to vote and also stand as candidates in local municipal elections in 2015. Now, in Wales, young people from the age of 16 can vote in Senedd elections.

I would encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote, whatever their gender. It saddens me when there is a low turn-out for elections.

If you choose not to be involved, others will make decisions for you and you will have to put up with what others decide. Seeing things that were not right in my community started me on the journey to where I am today, helping to raise funds to refurbish local playgrounds and helping to fight against the closure of the local library.

People are often scared of the unknown, they think that Community and County Councils are not for the ‘likes of them’. I would say, go for it ’feel the fear’ and do it anyway!

I’m inspired by any woman who, when they raise an idea and hear ‘yes, but…’ are not put off and never take it as a no! Any woman who faces the opposition and negativity of others, the nay-sayers, and finds a way round the difficulty or obstacle to reach their goal. Better to have tried and failed than failed to try - that’s my motto!

Councillor Angela Karadog, Green Party

I use International Women’s Day as a day to celebrate the strong and inspirational women I know. A reminder to lift each other up and also to be grateful for the work done before us to fight for equal rights and opportunities across the board.

We still have work to do though. We live in a world where girls can be denied an education, women aren’t allowed to work, and where they are, workers are denied equal pay and conditions. Where politicians can police our bodies and healthcare choices. Where women’s identities are up for public debate. Where misogyny is so ingrained into popular culture we can no longer see it. These issues hurt us all men, women, cis, trans, straight, gay and everything between.

None of us are equal until we are all equal and we need events like IWD to raise awareness, share support and educate.

Our local governments can’t represent us if they are not representative of us. I’m also a believer in ‘you’ve got to see it to be it’. Our young people need positive role models, if they see people like themselves getting involved and making a difference they are more likely to believe that they can too.

I’m inspired by anyone who works to make the world a better place. Locally we have some amazing women who do wonderful things.

Recently I’ve been really inspired by the Jamaican artist Koffee who despite growing up in a country where being gay is illegal as well as culturally shunned, is pushing LGBTQIA acceptance in mainstream circles. I admire all people who stand up to injustice but doing so when there is so much stacked against you is incredibly brave.

Happy New Year from all at Pontypridd Town Council.

As we enter 2023, I’ll begin by reflecting on the last 12 months. It has been a busy year at Pontypridd Town Council, with many significant developments. As the challenges and impact of the global pandemic changed, we were able to come together as a community on many occasions throughout the year. It has been wonderful to welcome residents and visitors alike to our in-person events and activities once again and to work together with the community to improve the lives of all in Pontypridd.

We have enjoyed community-focussed events in the Meadow Street Community Garden in Treforest, which continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated volunteers. In May, the annual Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival saw its highest attendance yet, as avid readers and authors joined us for three days of bookish fun, which also saw the launch of The Mab Trail - an outdoor, interactive storytelling trail based on Wales’ oldest myths and legends. In August, we all gathered in Ynysangharad Park on a gloriously sunny day to enjoy the return of our Summer Fun Day and vintage transport rally. And more recently, Pontypridd’s children (along with many grown ups too!) have enjoyed visiting Santa in his grotto at Pontypridd Museum.

Following the local elections in May, we welcomed many new members to the Town Council and also a new town Mayor - Councillor Lyndon Bengough. You can find out more about all our elected representatives by visiting Pontypridd Town Council’s website.

It has been a big year for Pontypridd Museum, which re-opened in March following extensive restoration work after damage to the building caused by Storm Dennis in 2020. We have recently welcomed a new Museum Business and Partnerships manager to the team. Nigel Blackamore joins us from Y Gaer Museum, Art Gallery and Library in Brecon and we look forward to seeing the exciting plans he has for the museum and its role at the heart of community develop and blossom.

We are all facing difficult times currently, as the cost of living crisis and household energy worries continue. I would like to give a friendly reminder that we are on hand to offer advice and a friendly ear to all our residents. From the 9th January, we will be running a Monday Meet Up in Pontypridd Museum. The Monday Meet Up is a welcoming, warm space to come and enjoy some company, relax, play games or watch films with free hot drinks, soup and warm snacks. Everyone is welcome, just come along to the museum anytime between 11am and 5.30pm each Monday.

2023 promises to be a vibrant year for Pontypridd. The Town Council will continue to work on numerous community projects throughout the area, with many announcements coming soon.

Meet our new Museum Business and Partnerships Manager

Pontypridd Town Council has appointed a new Museum Business and Partnerships Manager at Pontypridd Museum. Nigel Blackamore has taken up this new and exciting post this week, joining us from y Gaer Museum, Art Gallery and Library in Brecon.

I’m Nigel Blackamore, the new Museum Business and Partnerships Manager for Pontypridd Town Council at Pontypridd Museum. Career-wise, I was an archaeologist in a former life, I left Cardiff University and joined the National Museum. I spent about 10 years in the National Museum and then travelled up to Brecon and became the Senior Curator there to lead the project with the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore, redevelop and reinterpret the collections in Brecon. That took a number of years and the project got bigger and bigger and we eventually co-located with the town library with a brand-new building and our historic grade II* listed Shire Hall, which we re-developed back into the museum, restoring the courtroom and bringing it back to life.

That project came to a conclusion after Covid, so I spent the last couple of years finishing up things there and I reached a point where a new challenge was in order. After 15 years in Brecon, it seemed a good opportunity to get some fresh blood into that building

and take that project to the next level.

What interests me particularly about Pontypridd are the developments that have been happening in the last few years around the museum. With the brand-new library, the Transport for Wales hub, the Yma YMCA building and the discussions around the Muni Arts Centre, it just struck me that these are all so close together, that what we’ve got is a very tight cultural quarter in Pontypridd and I could see that the museum was the missing piece. The museum is much loved - it’s been open since the 1980s, but it hasn’t really changed.

I think now’s the time for us to look at that and with some funding like the new buildings that have surrounded it, the museum can grow and become the heart of that cultural quarter. Museums to me are all about education and community and we need to be at the centre of the community. We’ve now got a new, sparkling library outside our building with a road crossing in between us, which is an easy partner for us to sit with. All of the arrows point to one thing, which are exciting possibilities ahead.

My first priority is to evaluate the collection to see what treasures we have, identify what objects and collections are loved by the public and to discover what further treasures we have in our research collections. There’s an opportunity to bring out and really play with the way that we interpret and display objects and engage new audiences. I’m incredibly keen to increase the footfall and to see the building be vibrant and have lots of new people coming to see it for the first time.

We’ve had our challenges - particularly with the floods back in 2020, a lot of work went into saving the museum and bringing it back. Now that we’ve saved the collections and we’re in a better position, we’ve got an opportunity to go to the next level, which is ultimately to re-display, reinterpret and re-evaluate everything. I’m starting to get to know the building itself, it won’t be long before I know it like the back of my hand and then we can hopefully start to bring out the beauty of the building once again and organise lots of activities and

events and make the museum the beating heart of the community, as it always has been - it’s a case of restarting after the

challenges of the flooding and of course Covid.

These things will take time, particularly in the current climate, but there are things we can do quite quickly. We want to be a warm space, we’re not an official warm space but we want to be able to offer people the opportunity to come in and get involved. We want to offer the community the opportunity to volunteer with us and come and help us with the collections. We have a little team of volunteers and expanding that will help us to reinvigorate the collection management and find those community links. Also, education - the schools' curriculum has changed for Wales, there’s a really big opportunity for us to engage with local schools

and bring heritage and a sense of place to life.

Pontypridd Town Mayor visits Men's Sheds Group

Cllr Lyndon Bengough the Town Mayor was a recent visitor to the Pontypridd Men's Shed group who are based at Taff Meadow Community Centre in Treforest. The Town Council have been supporting the group since it's inception in March this year and they were visited by Town Clerk Tony Graham and the Mayor who were keen to see how the group were doing. Shed Chair Gareth Pugh said " we have increased our membership from the original four members to the thirty plus we have now, we are so grateful to the Town Council who have supported and advised us over the past eight months. We are very happy to make a donation to the Mayors charity and to give him a Bird Box to be used as a raffle prize."

The Shed meet every Wednesday at Taff Meadow from 10-12, new members very welcome.

Soroptimists International Donate Chain of Office

Soroptimists international is a world-wide network of women who work together to Educate, Empower and Enable women world- wide to achieve their potential and strive for peace.

The Pontypridd branch has been in existence for 60 years and has supported local and international charities extensively during that time, providing support for Women’s Aid, the local food bank, the Mayor’s Appeal and many others. Internationally, the most recent support was given to funding Bangla Cymru’s hospital in Chittagong and in enabling a woman health worker to undertake outreach work with families and children in the surrounding community.

It is with great sadness that the group has decided to disband due to a lack of new members and the age profile of existing members, but we are very pleased that our chain of office now has a safe home in Pontypridd Museum so that the efforts, contributions and aspirations of several generations of women from the area can be remembered and celebrated.

Countdown to Christmas with Pontypridd Town Council’s

Christmas Cracker Event!

Join in the festive fun in Pontypridd town centre this Christmas with a host of free events and activities organised by Pontypridd Town Council.

Christmas celebrations begin with Pontypridd Town Council’s Christmas Cracker on Saturday 26th November, from 2pm - 6:30pm.

Organised by Pontypridd Town Council in partnership with Your Pontypridd Business Improvement District (BID) and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, the event will feature an outdoor cinema, market stalls, children’s entertainment, fairground rides, reindeer and a very special festive guest, culminating in the official switching on of Pontypridd town centre’s Christmas lights.

Pontypridd Town Council’s Christmas Cracker event will begin at 2pm with fairground rides and market stalls peppered along Taff Street.

Festive favourite Arthur Christmas will be shown on the big screen from 3.30pm at a free outdoor cinema located on Mill Street. Limited seating will be available, early arrival is advised to secure your spot.

Local radio station GTFM will host proceedings and a very special guest will declare Christmas in Pontypridd officially underway by switching on Pontypridd town centre’s Christmas lights at 6pm at the main stage on Taff Street.

Further events are planned by Pontypridd Town Council throughout December.

Pontypridd Museum will be home to Santa’s Grotto and a Christmas market every Saturday in December in the run-up to Christmas, with the Grotto open on the 3rd, 10th and 17th December from 10am - 4pm. Entry to the grotto is free, with donations to the Mayor’s charity welcomed.

On Wednesday 14th December , the popular Mayor’s Charity Christmas Concert will take place in Pontypridd Museum between 7pm - 9pm . Among those performing are Côr Meibion Pontypridd and Bethan Parker. Tickets are £5 and are available at Pontypridd Museum.

Meadow Street Community and Coed Lleol - Small Woods Wales to Announce Partnership at Pontypridd Fun Day Event

Meadow Street Community, a local community garden in Treforest managed by Pontypridd Town Council, has teamed-up with Coed Lleol, the Small Woods Association in Wales, to bring a range of outdoor, physical and social activities to Pontypridd. The aim of the collaboration is to improve health and wellbeing through woodland and nature-based activities and to help the Meadow Street Community grow further.

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government’s Enabling Natural Resources and Well-being Scheme (ENRaW) Coed Lleol - Small Woods Wales is also supporting the Meadow Street site to develop into a community woodland hub and garden space, by funding the development of an all-weather structure to house activities and new and improved on-site facilities.

An Open Fun Day is being held on Thursday, 18th August between 11am and 3pm at the Meadow Street Community Garden where you can find out more about the plans and learn how you can get involved. Throughout the day, local people are invited to take part in a range of activities including: bug hunting, whittling, potting and planting, nature ID and more. The Meadow Street Community and Coed Lleol - Small Woods Wales teams will also be seeking ideas and suggestions on designs and styles of the new structures from everyone who attends.

Pontypridd Town Council Community Development Officer, Helen Williams says,

“We are delighted to join forces with Coed Lleol, the Small Woods Association in Wales to deliver this fantastic project for the people of Pontypridd. We hope to get the community inspired by nature and to give them opportunities to experience and value nature first-hand, on their doorsteps. Working together with Coed Lleol we are looking forward to developing Meadow Street even further with the opportunity to develop an all-weather low impact structure that will support woodland-based health and wellbeing activities, while also growing our community of fantastic volunteers, all of whom make Meadow Street the magical place that it is.”

“Working in partnership with Meadow Street and the enthusiastic team from Pontypridd Town Council involved with improving this location has been a fantastic opportunity for Coed Lleol to use a really special place, to engage local people in Pontypridd in a range of our woodland and outdoor health activities. Being able to support them to develop the site further, to become a Woodland Hub, through the ENRaW funded project, is such an exciting opportunity, we can’t wait to get the local community involved with moving this forward.”

Meadow Street Community is located along a busy footpath, connecting Hawthorn and Rhydyfelin to Treforest. The land lay unattended and overgrown for almost 8 years, before being re-acquired by Pontypridd Town Council. The site was devastated by the flooding following Storm Dennis in 2020, and at the beginning of 2021 work began in earnest to clear the space. The project is run by the Town Council and local volunteers, who are looking to add to their numbers and grow the community.

Summer Fun for all the Family over the Bank Holiday Weekend in Pontypridd!

Pontypridd Residents will have plenty to enjoy this August Bank Holiday weekend with a fun-filled family event planned by Pontypridd Town Council - our biggest summer event yet.

A variety of activities and entertainment are lined up for Pontypridd Town Council’s Summer Fun Day which will take place in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park on Saturday, August 27th.

Entrance to the event, which takes place between 11am - 5pm is free and all activities are free.

A children’s funfair, arena acts, a music stage, a petting farm, food stalls, sporting activities, face-painting and balloon art and much more will be on offer. The Town Council’s popular vintage transport rally will also return, with a parade of vintage vehicles though the town centre and an exhibition in the park.

Popular musician Ragsy, who appeared on ITV’s The Voice will form part of the music line-up along with other local performers Frasier Banks and Bethan Parker. Côr Meibion Pontypridd and Choirs for Good Pontypridd will also be performing during the day.

Children’s entertainer Martyn Geraint will also take to the stage and there’ll be plenty of opportunity to get active in the sports village and learn some new skills with the Avago Circus in the arena.

Local radio station GTFM will be on-site all-day broadcasting from the event.

The pART of Pontypridd Art Trail 2022 website to accompany our annual Art Trail taking place across the town centre of Ponty pridd and Ynysangharad Park is now live...

You can visit in person or view online HERE , by the latest graduates from the BA (Hons) Creative and Therapeutic Arts course at the University of South Wales, Treforest Campus. 

The students and course teaching team wanted to use this opportunity to honour and celebrate the wonderful relationships cultivated with venues, businesses and organisations across our town who have inspired the artwork that has been created. As the Community Artists, Participatory Artists and Socially Engaged Arts Practitioners of the future, the students have produced artwork that has engaged or has been informed by the community of Pontypridd, or invites participation from the public once displayed. The exhibition not only showcases their work as artists, but also demonstrates their passion for supporting our community’s wellbeing, their ability to form meaningful connections, in addition to theirs and the community’s resilience during challenging times.

Students have been asked to consider accessibility and inclusivity at the heart of their practice, so this exhibition website content can range from photographs, to videos with captions, soundscapes, flip books, guided meditation, recipes and more! We believe it is the most current and relevant way for our students to showcase their skills, providing them with important tools and experience for future practice, with perhaps an even wider potential reach than a traditional exhibition format.

Celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month with us at Pontypridd Town Council.

March is a time to celebrate the achievements of women the world over. On March 8th International Women’s Day is marked globally and women’s history is remembered and promoted all month long.

On Saturday, March 19th join us in the new Community Hub at Pontypridd Museum to commemorate local trailblazer, pioneering writer and evolutionary theorist Elaine Morgan and to hear from Pontypridd’s first ever female MP, Alex Davies-Jones.

The event will begin at 10.15am and refreshments will be served.

The morning will begin with tea and coffee and a welcome to Pontypridd Town Council’s new Community Hub in the basement of Pontypridd Museum by Councillor Jayne Brencher.

Alex Davies-Jones MP will be speaking to us about her experiences as a young, female MP and the causes close to her heart, including her campaigns on issues around fertility and women’s safety.

Elaine Morgan’s biographer, Dr Daryl Leeworthy will give a talk on ‘Elaine Morgan and her Times.’ Dr Leeworthy will touch on his biography, ‘Elaine Morgan, A Life Behind the Screen,’ published in 2020 and his latest work, ‘Causes in Common, Welsh women and the Struggle for Social Democracy,’ published later this spring.

There will be a chance to ask questions and for us to discuss the issues raised before enjoying tea, coffee and cake.

Pontypridd Museum Reopens!

Pontypridd Town Council is delighted to announce that Pontypridd Museum is reopening!

The museum was officially reopened by Dawn Bowden the Deputy Minister for Art and Sport in a special event on Friday 4th March before it opens its doors to the public once again on Monday March 7th .

The event was attended by community groups and councillors with speeches by the Deputy Minister for Art and Sport, Dawn Bowden MS, the MS for Pontypridd Mick Antoniw, Pontypridd Town Mayor, Carl Thomas, Pontypridd Town Council CEO and Clerk Tony Graham and Councillor Lynda Davies.

Museum curator Morwenna Lewis was on hand to answer questions and to guide visitors around the museum.

Pontypridd Museum Reopens for the First Time Since Storm Dennis

Deputy Minister for Art and Sport Dawn Bowden MS officially reopening Pontypridd Museum.

Pontypridd Town Council is delighted to announce that Pontypridd Museum is reopening!

The museum is opening its doors to the public for the first time since the town suffered severe flooding during Storm Dennis in February 2020.

From Monday, March 7th the museum, which has been closed for almost two years while repair works have been taking place, will once again welcome visitors, with new exhibitions, a programme of events and activities and a brand new community hub in the basement.

Alterations to the building have taken place including improved storage for the museum’s collection, to reduce the flood risk to the many historical objects.

The museum was officially reopened by Dawn Bowden MS, the Deputy Minister for Arts & Sport in a special event today.

‘We’re thrilled to finally be able to welcome visitors back to the museum in person,” says Morwenna Lewis, Pontypridd Museum’s curator. “Everyone has been working extremely hard behind the scenes for the past two years to restore and to rejuvenate this essential space in Pontypridd’s rich cultural tapestry. We’re looking forward to a big year ahead, with many new exhibitions and celebrations of Pontypridd’s heritage to come.”

Housed in the former Tabernacl Welsh Baptist Chapel on Bridge Street, Pontypridd Museum tells the story of an area transformed, from a quiet Valleys community to a thriving industrial town at the heart of the South Wales coalfield. Around this industry sprung a vibrant culture of music, art, sport and political activity which still shapes the town today.

The museum will be open every Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm from March 7th.

New Accessible Allotment Opens in Pontypridd

A new accessible allotment has been opened by Pontypridd Town Council to provide a space for residents to enjoy the pleasure of gardening and time outdoors in nature.

The allotment in Berw Fields, Trallwn is the first of its kind in Pontypridd and features accessible raised beds, wheelchair-friendly widened pathways and a compost toilet.

The plot has been purposely built with accessibility for wheelchair users at its heart and has been funded by a Community Lottery grant and by the Town Council. Town Clerk and CEO of Pontypridd Town Council Tony Graham said,

“Allotment gardening is a very rewarding pastime and can contribute greatly to the quality of people’s lives both mentally and physically. Unfortunately, it is all too common that allotments are not accessible spaces, so we are delighted to make the facility at Berw Fields a site for everyone to enjoy.”

The allotment’s first volunteer gardener Carol Baker has begun planting at the site, and it is hoped that other green-fingered Pontypridd residents will soon be joining her.

The Mab Comes to Pontypridd - Walk with Wales’ Myths and Legends This May

A new interactive literary art trail based on Wales ’oldest myths and legends has been launched in Pontypridd by the Town Council.

The Mab Trail will see a series of permanent story stones and story boards placed in locations across Pontypridd depicting the tales of The Mab, a new bilingual book for children, which reimagines the ancient stories of the Mabinogi for today’s young readers.

Edited by the inaugural Children’s Laureate for Wales, Eloise Williams and author and broadcaster Matt Brown, The Mab will feature the 11 stories of the Mabinogi re-told by 11 of Wales ’finest children’s writers. The stories have been translated into Welsh by Bethan Gwanas and the foreword to the collection is written by Michael Sheen.

The Mab Trail is sponsored by Pontypridd Town Council in partnership with Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival and aims to promote a love of reading and encourage creativity, inspire new storytellers and artists and nurture a love of Wales ’landscape, literature and traditions.

Avid story-hunters will be able to discover all 11 stories of The Mab , which will be rooted in Pontypridd’s soil with interactive pieces of public art in the form of story stones, with images from The Mab by illustrator Max Low. Trail-goers are able to take rubbings of the stones, encouraging them to walk the stories of Wales and to create some new ones of their own, inspired by Pontypridd.

The Mab Trail will be launched with local schools on May 12th 2022, and will be open to the public from Saturday May 14th 2022 to coincide with Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival.

The Mab Trail will start and finish in Pontypridd Museum. It will take in 3 other sites:

Ynysangharad Park, Berw Road Field and Pontypridd Common.

Pontypridd Museum will house information on The Mab Trail , along with copies of The Mab . From there, story-hunters can follow the trail to Ynysangharad Park, where 4 story stones depicting the women of The Mab can be found. On Berw Road Field, 3 story-stones show the magic of The Mab and on Pontypridd Common, trail-goers will find 4 story stones containing the legends of the animals of The Mab .

Pontypridd Town Council has condemned Russian military action in Ukraine. In a meeting of the Council on Thursday night, all members came together in their support of the Ukranian people and unanimously agreed the following motion:

'Pontypridd Town Council stands united with the people of Ukraine in the face of the disgraceful aggression shown today by Russia.

The Town Council urges the government in Westminster to impose the toughest possible sanctions in order to demonstrate to Vladimir Putin that his behaviour will not be allowed to succeed.'

Countdown to Christmas with Pontypridd Town Council

Join in the festive fun in Pontypridd town centre this Christmas with a host of events and activities organised by Pontypridd Town Council.

Pontypridd will be merry and bright this Yuletide, with further investment made by the Town Council into the town’s Christmas lights. Adding to the new lights unveiled in the town centre in 2020, this year additional areas will be included in the festive glow with the Christmas lights now extending to Taff Street, Market Reserve and Church Street. The lights will be switched on in mid-November.

A special visitor will be in town in the run-up to Christmas. Pontypridd Museum will be home to Santa’s Grotto on November 27th and December 4th, 11th and 18th from 11am - 3pm.

Come and meet Santa, who’ll be giving out selection boxes and sweets as early Christmas presents. A visit to the Grotto is 50p per child, with all money donated to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

Family Christmas trails are back again this year. In the weeks before Christmas, a Victorian themed trail will run through the town centre, with prizes for completed trails. And why not blow away the cobwebs between Christmas and New Year by following the 12 Doors of Christmas Trail on Pontypridd Common. More details for each trail will be revealed on the Town Council’s social media pages soon.

There are lots of opportunities to get creative this Christmas too.

Schools in the Town Council area will all receive a Christmas tree and are invited to take part in a competition to decorate the Christmas tree of the future. In a continuation of the Town Council’s focus on tackling climate change, schools are asked to decorate their tree using recycled and sustainable materials. Pontypridd Town Mayor, Carl Thomas will judge each entry. The closing date is December 1st.

Pontypridd residents can join in the creative Christmas cheer by sharing pictures or videos of their own Christmas trees or Christmassy window decorations on social media. Don’t forget to tag Pontypridd Town Council when posting.

Budding young artists will be pleased to see the return of the annual Christmas card competition with a top prize of £25. Working in partnership with Kip McGrath Pontypidd, the Town Council is calling for entries from children up to the age of 11 who live or attend school or activity groups in the area.

All entries will either be displayed in the Pontypridd Museum or laminated and hung on the Christmas tree in Pontypridd Town Centre.

The competition will be judged in three age groups:

Age 3-6 (Reception, Year Groups 1 & 2)

Age 7-9 (Year Group 3 & 4)

Age 10-11 (Year Group 5 & 6)

The winners in each age group will receive a prize of £25.00 and have their card framed. In the run up to Christmas, the three winners will also see their Christmassy creations on the big screen on the EE building in Pontypridd Town Centre.

Participants are asked to design a Christmas card (cover only). The card should measure 15¼cm x 21cm (6” x 8”) (A5). The closing date for entries is Thursday 2nd December.

Please include full name, age or year group and school/group of the child on the back.

Members of Trehafod Community Garden were, this week, the lucky recipients of an interesting partnership between Pontypridd Town Council and Caerphilly over 50’s forum. For the past few months Elvis tribute act CJ Horton from Caerphilly and Bethan Parker from Pontypridd have been visiting Care homes to offer an hour’s entertainment and fun in their gardens. When Andy Phillips secretary of Trehafod Community Garden found out he approached the Council and asked if they could be included, he said, “We have a care home right next door to us, we also have a Stroke group and others who have had no direct entertainment for over 18 months,” The Council were happy to oblige and the concert went ahead witnessed by the various groups and members of the garden along with Pontypridd Town Mayor Cllr Carl Thomas who said. “This is just the kind of Community event that we at the council love to support, it was a great pleasure to see so many happy faces and to share in the joy that music can create” It is hoped that further events can be arranged in the not-too-distant future

Mayors Virtual London Marathon

On Sunday 3rd October, Pontypridd Mayor Carl Thomas will be running the official virtual London Marathon around Pontypridd, raising some much need funds for his nominated charities; Velindre Cancer Centre, Pontypridd Foodbank, and Help for Heroes. With the ongoing limitations of Town Council events that cannot be held, opportunities to raise money for the Mayor’s charities have been restricted to date. The Mayor said, “Charities have also been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, so running my first ever marathon is one of a few ways I’m hoping that the fantastic people in the communities of Pontypridd will help and donate to these worthy causes.”

The marathon run will begin at 10:30am on the village green in Hawthorn, with the route for the Mayor taking in all wards that the Town Council represents over 2 laps of Pontypridd to cover the 26.2 miles marathon distance. Further details of the route will be published closer to the date so members of the public can support if they wish.

The Allotment holders at Taylor’s Field in Trallwn have recently been the happy recipients of a composting toilet and Wash House which was constructed on site by Welsh company Reworkshop. Funded by the Community Lottery Fund and Pontypridd Town Council the Wash House is a very efficient and Eco-friendly system for waste disposal. Unlike conventional toilet systems, there is no flushing involved. Compost toilets depend on aerobic bacteria to break down waste, similar to that of outdoor composting. Rather than flushing, waste is composted with carbon-rich sources like wood shavings, bark mulch, leaves, etc.

Allotment secretary Adrian Dumphy said, “We have been looking for a system that is both friendly to the environment and also practical in its use and this Wash House definitely fits the bill.”

One of the advantages of the Wash house is that it can be adapted to suit all disabilities and has the advantage of wheelchair adaptability. “We are finding a more and more diverse selection of the community are accessing allotment plots, this includes small children attending with parents and grandparents so a toilet facility has become essential”.

Trallwn Ward Councillor Lynda Davies said “Pontypridd Town Council is delighted to have been able to support Taylor’s Field Allotments with their new composting toilet. The Council is totally committed to working with all its allotment holders to improve the quality of their sites in ways which are sustainable and eco-friendly”.

Saturday 31st of July saw the launch of Trehafod Community Garden, the project has been developed and coordinated by a team of volunteers from the local community whose aim is to offer therapeutic horticultural activities and education to both able bodied and disabled community members. Working with the Direct Services team from Pontypridd Town Council they have been able to rejuvenate a green space on the site of the old Farmers Arms. A number of raised beds, which are accessible to wheel chair users have been built, and also a serenity garden has been created for members to enjoy a time for relaxation and reflection. Cllr Lyndon Bengough, Deputy Mayor of Pontypridd Town Council and Peter and Pauline Trivett from the Community were invited to officially open the garden. The event was well attended with Councillor Gareth Capel on hand to help with a very successful raffle which raised funds for further development. Entertainment was provided by Howard Griffiths of GTFM. Volunteer coordinator Andy Phillips said, “this has been a real Community effort and I can’t thank all involved enough” he added “We are always on the lookout for new recruits and anyone who would like to volunteer to help can by either Phoning 07708251268 or emailing on Trehafodgarden@mail.com”

Pontypridd Town Council Announces Partnership with Your Pontypridd Business Improvement District

Pontypridd Town Council has added to its growing list of partnerships, with Your Pontypridd Business

Improvement District (BID) becoming the latest local organisation to collaborate with the body on

projects to develop and improve the area for residents and visitors alike.

The partnership is part of the Town Council’s ambitious plans to create a Community Hub in the newly

redeveloped basement of Pontypridd Museum, which was badly damaged during the flooding in February 2020.

The Community Hub will house several key organisations working across a variety of sectors in

Pontypridd, including the Your Pontypridd BID and Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival and will provide

a space for community groups and individuals to meet and conduct activities.

Lynda Davies, Chair of Pontypridd Town Council’s Regeneration and Museum Committee said,

‘We’re pleased to continue to grow and develop our relationships with local organisations, and we’re

delighted to collaborate with the Your Pontypridd BID team at such a crucial point in Pontypridd town

centre’s history. With major redevelopment work taking place in the town currently, this is a tremendously exciting time for the area. We’re looking forward to working together to harness Pontypridd’s potential and deliver long lasting improvements for businesses, residents and visitors.’

Your Pontypridd BID will work with the Town Council on continuing to improve the town centre, with

the input of local businesses at the heart of the decisions taken. The partnership will bolster the work

already being undertaken by Your Pontypridd BID, who are focussing on working toward a safer, more

accessible and attractive Pontypridd town centre and greater say for business in the area on the decisions

that affect them.

Following the successful outcome of a ballot process at the beginning of 2021, the Your Pontypridd BID’s second five year term of work began back in April. Your Pontypridd BID Projects Officer James Payne said, ‘The partnership with Pontypridd Town Council gives us a fresh start, and a new home with the relocation of our office to the town’s new Community Hub. This will allow us to focus on the next five years and to work closely with the Town Council to improve Pontypridd. We’re glad to be working with such a forward thinking team.’

This past Saturday saw the official opening of Storyville Books, Pontypridds newest bookstore! There to open the store was Pontypridd Town Mayor Carl Thomas who had this to say:

Pontypridd Town Council have invested funds into Pontypridd-based charity Purple Shoots

Purple Shoots tackles poverty, disadvantage, unemployment and social isolation through encouraging entrepreneurship and independence. One of the things it does to achieve this is “microfinance” – offering small, ethical loans to aspiring business owners to enable them to start or run a small business. That sounds like any other lender – but the difference is that Purple Shoots will look at lending to people who have been rejected by everyone else. 96% of their customers were on benefits at the time they had their loan.

Since it started 8 years ago, the charity has enabled over 500 new businesses to start across South Wales and supported another 150 existing ones, enabling around 700 people to move out of unemployment.

Purple Shoots founder, Karen Davies, says “We want to see everyone with access to fair and affordable finance so that those who have been left behind by or excluded from the economy can have an opportunity to build their own financial resilience and create long-term, sustainable change for themselves.”

Pontypridd Town Council want to ensure that this opportunity is available to people in Pontypridd into the future and have invested their funds for Purple Shoots to lend to new businesses in their area.

Cllr Simon Pritchard, Leader of the Town Council, said “We are pleased to partner with Purple Shoots to give entrepreneurs in Pontypridd the opportunity to start their own business. As part of the Town Council’s commitment to the well-being and economic growth of our area we see this fund as a way of helping our communities to recover from the effects of Covid and for individuals to use their potential to build and develop a new business in Pontypridd.”

Pontypridd Town Council had the great pleasure in supporting this year’s Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival. Due to the current COVID restrictions this year’s Festival was held virtually and we were also delighted to offer the use of the Town Council Offices as the base over the Saturday and Sunday to broadcast the 10 events online.

We are looking forward to building on the strong partnership we have with the Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival and are excited to support the Festival in the future!

Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival 2021: A Wonderful Weekend of Amazing Authors and Brilliant Books!

Young readers and their parents enjoyed a jam-packed programme of events last weekend at Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival, with stellar names like David Baddiel and Kate Pankhurst featuring in the line-up.

This year’s festival - the biggest yet- was held online on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May. Now in its fourth year, the Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival continues to grow in its scale and ambition to encour-age a love of books and reading for pleasure while having a fun-filled time doing so.

This year’s event was a little different to usual, with all the action taking place online. Thanks to the support of our partners Pontypridd Town Council, we were able to base the festival in the Mayor’s Parlour for the weekend, which would ordinarily be used as our authors’ greenroom. From there, the team broadcast 10 events online over Saturday and Sunday, with little bookworms tuning in from the comfort of their homes.

The festival attracted lots of local families and schools, with many getting in touch via our social media channels and the festival website’s chat function. Virtual visitors from all over the globe dropped in to Pon-typridd over the weekend too — with festival-goers tuning in from as far afield as Melbourne in Australia!

Even though we were interacting through screens, we were so pleased that a festival atmosphere prevailed, with parents sending in pictures of children enjoying the talks and getting stuck-in to the many activities on offer. Children (and parents too!) were keen to engage with the authors, with a wide variety of topics and ideas explored.

Events varied from interactive storytelling sessions, illustration workshops and a writing workshop with Wales’ Children’s Laureate, Eloise Williams to author talks given by a fantastic line-up of big names and local talent from the worlds of children’s fiction and non- fiction.

A definite highlight of the weekend was receiving a message from a very happy Mum whose son had asked David Baddiel a question. She told us that “…having his question answered by his hero has meant so much to him!”

We were also pleased to mark National Children’s Day UK on the Sunday, a UN based initiative dedicated to childhood and promoting the rights of children. In particular, a session with campaigner Laura Coryton, who discussed her book Speak Up! with BBC Wales’ Parliamentary Correspondent Elliw Gwawr, inspired the young participants to get involved in world issues and work towards making positive changes for the fu-ture.

We’re thrilled by our ongoing partnership with Pontypridd Town Council, with whom we hope to develop the festival even further. As a festival we are deeply rooted in the local community and working with Ponty-pridd Town Council, along with the many other community groups and initiatives they support will strengthen those links and the cultural wellbeing of the area for years to come — with local collaboration and community involvement a key shared principle. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Pontypridd Children’s Book Festival, and have some really exciting plans to announce over the coming months!

Remedial Work to start at Pontypridd Museum

We are pleased to announce that the remedial work in Pontypridd Museum will start on Monday 12 ^th April with a completion date of Monday 26 ^th July 2021. The Museum has unfortunately been closed since February 2020 following substantial flood damage to the ground floor caused by Storm Dennis.

All of the ground floor area will be fully refurbished with new stores, offices, community area and kitchen/café.

The allocated Council parking spaces in the car park adjacent to the Town Council Offices will be utilised by the contractors carrying out the work on the Museum therefore unfortunately there will no parking facilities available during this time.

These are very exciting times with the regeneration of Pontypridd and we very much look forward to the Museum re-opening and being a part of the future plan as the Museum plays such an important role in Pontypridd’s history and culture!

We cannot wait to welcome everyone back!

Councillor Loretta Tomkinson, Pontypridd Town Mayor, attended a small socially distanced service at Mindset gym, Treforest Industrial Estate on 15th November with Neil Adams ( ex service personnel) leading the service. The last post was played followed by a 2 minute silence. Neil remembered the fallen with a poem called "The poppy" and Stephanie Webber, a local singer, sang "We'll meet again". Money was raised through the sale of cupcakes with all proceeds going to charity.

In darkness, mental health organisations are a guiding light

Today is World Mental Health Day and given the year that we have endured so far perhaps now is a time more than ever to take care and reflect on our own mental health an of those around us. In support of World Mental Health Day local organizations will be illuminating their buildings in green, shining a light on the bodies that are here to support those that support all who are affected by Mental Health issues.

The organisations include BAVO, Interlink RCT, VAMT, Bridgend County Borough Council, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Awen Cultural Trust, Pontypridd Town Council, Wellbeing Merthyr and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. While signposting to mental health organisations, the activities will also help by encouraging people to talk about mental health with friends, family and colleagues. This will reduce ongoing stigma around mental health. You could also volunteer with the local or national groups involved, or BAVO, Interlink RCT, and VAMT can help volunteers with a relevant organisation.

For spreading the word on social media, the hashtags to use are #worldmentalhealthday and #mentalhealth. Check these tags to find relevant people, organisations and resources. In addition, visit Eventbrite to see a timetable of talks, discussions and wellbeing activities available on Zoom during World Mental Health Day hosted by the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Third Sector Mental Health Forum.

We would like to wish you all a great day where we can all celebrate the growing awareness of Mental Health and continue to work hard to help all those who suffer.

To celebrate World Mental Health Day this 10th October, local organisations which support mental health are illuminating their buildings in green. In the dark times of a pandemic and rising mental health issues, this shines a light on the bodies that can support people. The organisations include Interlink RCT, VAMT, Wellbeing Merthyr, BAVO, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Bridgend County Borough Council, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

The buildings to spot lit up in green include:

· Angelton Clinic, Bridgend

· Bridgend Civic Offices as well as The Old Bridge and the walkway in front of the civic offices

· The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl

· The Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare

· Park + Dare Theatre, Treorchy

· Pontypridd Museum

· Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant

· Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, Mountain Ash

· Redhouse Cymru, Merthyr Tydfil

· Kier Hardie University Health Park, Aberdare

Other community and voluntary groups are being encouraged to join in the day by lighting their premises in green, using green in general, or decorating their buildings with green.

While signposting mental health organisations, the activities will also reduce ongoing stigma around mental health by making it a topic of general conversation. One way to reduce the stigma is to talk about mental health with friends, family and colleagues. You could also volunteer with the local or national groups involved, and volunteering councils BAVO, Interlink RCT, and VAMT can place you with an organisation to support.

Kathryn Rogerson-Davies of Interlink RCT said, “These are distressing times for so many people. But help is available, and a brighter future is possible if people reach out to local organisations.

In Britain, we have trouble seeking support with mental health issues, but that needs to change. It’s great to see groups coming together to begin these life-changing conversations about mental health.”

Mental health concerns are particularly pertinent in 2020. Rates of depression have almost doubled during the coronavirus pandemic, with almost one in five adults (19.2%) experiencing some form of depression. The previous year, almost one in ten (9.7%) of adults had some form of depression. Currently, the male suicide rate is at a two decade high in England and Wales.

The pandemic has also been an economic calamity. The people most likely to experience depression were groups who are often economically disadvantaged, being adults aged 16 to 39, female, unable to afford unexpected expenses, and disabled people. Indeed, the pandemic has hit society unequally. World Mental Health Day’s five calls to action take into consideration inequality in a year which has seen race rioting as well as a global pandemic.

The calls to action are to recognise and respond to racism in all its forms as a threat to health and wellbeing across the lifespan; simulate and accelerate efforts to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals targets; invest in social and behavioural interventions; ensure access to quality and affordable mental health care and primary care; and reduce disparities in mental health care.

The organisations spearheading the local events of World Mental Health Day are part of the Cwm Taf Morgannwg T4MH Third Sector Mental Health Forum. They are working in partnership to develop new and existing mental health services for locals.

Christmas Events Cancelled

.We are sad to announce this year's Christmas events organised by the Town Council have been cancelled due to the on-going circumstances surrounding Coronavirus and in line with Welsh Government Guidelines.

The cancelled events are the Christmas Switching On event which was due to take place on Saturday 14th November, the Mayor's Charity Concert on Saturday 5th December and Santa's Grotto in the Pontypridd Market throughout December.

This is the first time in over 40 years that we have had to take a decision like this and we are so disappointed as we know how much these events mean to the people of all ages in Pontypridd and surrounding communities.

This year we have invested in all new Christmas lights for Pontypridd Town Centre which will be put up as normal and of course the Christmas tree. We are looking into other ways you can watch and enjoy the lights being switched on this year so please keep checking website and social media for updates!

We are delighted to announce that we have agreed to donate £1,500 to Velindre Cancer Centre. The Town Council has supported Velindre since 2012 through our fundraising event, better known as 'Ponty's Big Run for Fun' . However, due to recent circumstances of Covid-19, the event was unfortunately cancelled, giving us the opportunity to donate and continue the support towards those who need it most at Velindre Cancer Centre.

We would like to thank Councillor Jayne Brencher who moved forward an emergency motion approved by Council in January and which received unanimous cross party support. We believe this decision was the correct one and will continue to provide the high levels of care that local residents deserve!

Below, the Chief Executive writes his thoughts on how the Town Council are facing the current crisis, our support for the local food bank and how we can all pull together during these difficult times:

Hi everyone and a Happy Easter to you all. I trust the coming few days will be enjoyable for you despite the current restrictions that we are all experiencing. It certainly is a very strange period for many of us and this Easter holiday will be like none other I suspect. Like many of you I will be missing spending time with my sons, their partners and our gorgeous granddaughters but we will be following government advice to stay indoors to protect others and in our small way to help ease the pressure on the NHS.

The Town Council has been through a period of steep change in recent weeks and like so many other organisations we are adjusting to all that this means for our staff and our working practises. A number of our activities have been significantly scaled back and we are adapting to video conferencing and using technology a lot more. I thought it would be good to tell you about one of the things we have been doing which is working with and supporting Pontypridd Foodbank and our local supermarkets to ensure that the most vulnerable among us are cared for and have enough to eat. We are partnering with Cllr Andrew Morgan and his teams at RCT Council along with Mandy and her team at the foodbank to ensure that stocks of food which had reduced in recent weeks are kept high enough to meet increased demand. Last week the foodbank fed nearly six times more people in a week than in the same period a year ago! This is scary but not unsurprising as many people have lost their jobs or are finding life challenging at the moment. Coming on top of the recent floods it does seem that Pontypridd and the surrounding area has had more than its fair share of challenges recently. As you will see from the photos Mandy and her team are continuing their brilliant work (whilst keeping 2m apart as much as possible) and have moved to delivering food parcels rather than people calling to the foodbank which reduces travel, the number of visitors and the chances of infection. The wonderful folk at TraVol Community Transport are using their fleet of vehicles and their volunteers to deliver the parcels on behalf of the foodbank … so massive thanks to them.

So why write this short message? Well, firstly, to say a huge thank you and well done to all those community groups – such as the foodbank – who are caring for and serving their communities at this difficult time. The wonderful spirit and desire to help that I saw during the flooding and in recent weeks has moved me once again. I love how our communities look after their own and want to make sure no one goes without. Secondly, and importantly, to ask for your help. When you go shopping in the coming days/weeks please remember to put a little something in the foodbank collection points (the big baskets near the tills). Donations have been down recently because of limits on what can be purchased and because people are naturally concerned for their own families. However, please – if you are able – buy an extra couple of tins (e.g. fish, meat, fruit, veg, potatoes, UHT milk) or packets (e.g. mash) of something and put it in the collection points near the tills. You just don’t know what a difference that will make to someone who is unable to put food on the table for their families at the moment.

Along with many households and businesses in Pontypridd, the Town Council has been significantly affected by the flooding this past weekend. Our hearts go out to those who have had to leave their homes and do not know when they will be able to return. The basement area of the town museum flooded and parts of our historical collection have been damaged. Morwenna and her team are assessing the damage and putting into effect our emergency plans. The lower basement area of the offices has been flooded causing damage to our heating system. In addition, the community centre and workshop at Taff Meadow have been severely affected. We are so grateful for all the offers of help and assistance. We will be taking up some of those offers when we have a clearer picture of the situation. In the meantime, let us look out for one another and if you can help someone else in need please do. The Town Council will be looking to see what help we can give to others once we get over our immediate problems. Planning Application Objection to Extension of Craig yr hesg Quarry

Pontypridd Town Council have issued a statement regarding the planning application being considered by RCT’s planning committee on Thursday 6th February to extend the works at Craig Yr Hesg Quarry in Glyncoch.

At its recent Town Council meeting the planned extension was strongly criticized and a letter of objection ( which can be found here ) has been sent to the planning committee. The Leader of the Town Council, Cllr Simon Pritchard, will address the committee before the decision is made. Chair of the Town Council’s Environment and Direct Services Committee, Cllr Jeff Baxter, commented as follows: ‘We are extremely concerned at the application to extend Craig Yr Hesg quarry which we believe will be detrimental to the health and well-being of the local community. The potential increase in the volume of lorries travelling along Berw Road, the continuation of blasting in the area and the resultant air pollution caused by dust may be extended by a further 25 years. In our view this is unacceptable and we are joining with local residents in calling on members of the planning committee to reject this application.’

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Carl Thomas attended Kwik Fit in Pontypridd on 12th September on behalf of the Mayor to support their “Tour De Branch”, where Kwik Fit employees are cycling all over the country from branch to branch in 30 days to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

They arrived at Pontypridd after cycling from Bristol on Day 24 of the challenge. They stopped for a well-earned break and to meet a family from Bridgend where one of the children had been affected by cancer. Further details and donations can be found at https://fundraising.kwik-fit.com .

Cheque for £2,500 to the Friends of Graigwen Woods Trust

The woods are a wonderful example of the natural beauty that surrounds Pontypridd and the Town Council are delighted to support this local community group in their efforts. They have big plans for the future and we will be supporting them along the way.

Congratulations to Coedpenmaen Primary School on winning this year's School Challenge

Congratulations to Coedpenmaen Primary School for their winning entry to this year’s School Challenge. The school’s Senedd completed a really interesting project about air pollution and how it affects their community.

Next, they organised a ‘Clean Air’ day and encouraged parents to either walk to school or turn the car engine off whilst parked. They have also asked parents for donations of plants to sell. Monies raised will go towards purchasing window boxes for us to fill with plants-mainly air purifying ones.

Loretta Tomkinson, Mayor of Pontypridd presented the children with the trophy and prize money for £100.00.
