DONNA WHITTINGTON

Artist Statement

I am a community artist with an array of life experiences that fuel my creativity. Many elements of my life are inspired by nature's strength, its beauty and power, and this often overflows into my art designs. I am passionate about creating tactile textile pieces with a purpose. I aim to engage the senses and provide a rich haptic sensory experience for the viewer, I believe that this approach promotes a deeper connection with the artwork.

My art creates peaceful, reflective moments, promoting self-worth, enriching wellbeing and energising community connectivity. My creative inspiration comes from nurturing, kindness and positivity, encouraging meaningful conversations and promoting a sense of togetherness, across generations within communities.

I have always been surrounded by traditional Welsh arts and crafts. Countless memorable evenings spent around the table with the significant, talented women in my family, one generation passing on their legacy of skills to the next whilst recounting amusing stories and sharing any difficulties of the day. I try to impart this social fusion of togetherness and understanding into my practice.

Creating “Sunrise Over Ponty” I wanted to capture the true unique spirit and essence of Pontypridd and weave it into the fabric of the artwork. I aimed to emulate how the traders are an integral part of the town’s foundations. Their shops are the heartbeat of the community. Many businesses have been passed down through generations showcasing the town's rich history and tradition. Pontypridd is a vibrant and thriving market town and I wanted to create artwork that celebrates the rich heritage and offer hope to future generations as they embrace the next chapter.

I would like thank Jayne from Marth's Homestore for providing me with the space in her charming shop and for her kind assistance throughout the process. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of discovering the delightful fusion of vintage and modern home decor at Marth's Homestore, I highly recommend making it a priority during your next trip to Pontypridd.
