STEVEN MORRIS

Artist Statement

I describe myself as a multi-media 2d artist, who likes to dive into the world of making paintings, drawings, interactive art, installations, image manipulation, and digital art. I like to take risks when creating artwork, that questions my own and the viewer’s perspectives and ideas. I use my creativity to self-express my loud, bubbly, and friendly personality, my identity as a proud queer artist, and how I see the world around me. I feel passionate about feminism, self-love, empowerment, world peace, LGBTQ+, and my love for extraterrestrial life. My work has been and continues to be a self-love journey for me and the viewers of my work.

This piece provides the importance of having role models in our community and our museum, and how valuable it is to have role models in our lives to look up to. Looking at the artists in the museum, I noticed that their collection is heavily created by men, and a few women, which got me thinking ‘Where is the diversity?’. The investigation aesthetic of this work reflects how it felt when searching for artists in this museum, and how the museum is actively trying to be more inclusive. The playful naiveness of this piece plays into how I feel it is important for children to have role models to relate to, and how this shouldn’t be something we search for. These Role Models will have an impact on our lives forever, it gives us something to relate to, feel inspired by, and gain motivation to become successful.

I would like to thank Pontypridd Museum for allowing me to share my work in their great space of the past, present, and future.
