FOX
Artist Statement
Hi, my name is Fox, and I am a mixed media artist working with a wide range of materials; anything from drawing to sculpting on both small and large scale. My focus is self-expression, with a drive to encourage others to discover themselves on a deeper level through creativity and the nourishing qualities of art.
As my name suggests, I have an affinity with woodland creatures and the natural world. Consequently, my colour palettes follow the seasons, my mark making and material application is imbued with tangled, frenetic energy, my materials are often foraged as well as scavenged or recycled, and imagined creatures serve as vehicles for exploring the self.
I have an in-depth understanding and empathy for the variety of forms in which neurodivergence and disability presents. I recognise how rest and emotional regulation strategies are unique to each person. Having experimented with various approaches over time, I am experienced in providing safe and accepting spaces that help people discover what works for them in their own time. My understanding of this through personal experience shines through in my work.
My intentions behind this project were to make self-expression and discovery accessible. I did this by setting an example of self-discovery through costume and inviting participants to reflect on who they are and what nourishes them during character workshops. Please read the resulting comic showing the characters learn about and share what nourishes them. A video reading link is available below. Read more about my process in my sketch book on the table (Audio link below). You can create your own character using the worksheets on the table or I can send you a digital copy on request. Thank you to Becky, to Jeff and Storyville books for hosting the character workshops and finally thanks to the participants. Two murals inspired by these workshops now adorn the book shop walls. This was my way of giving back to the community.
