ANDY PHAM

Artist Statement

My name is Andi, and I am a multidisciplinary artist and inclusive art facilitator. Originally from Vietnam, I am now based in Pontypridd. In my practice, I work with various materials and media. Every material holds a meaning and combining them can convey a more complex narrative. Simplicity and softness are consistent qualities of my work, with delicate linework and subtle colours. In addition, my culture is innately in the work, evidenced in its intricacy and details. Making art and facilitating creativity with others has been my safe and happy place for many years — a space where I can heal from within. Now, I desire to share this experience with others through process-driven workshops, allowing participants to engage in the act of making and enhancing their well-being.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working with the people of Pontypridd to create a piece that pays tribute to the town, now exhibited at Pontypridd Museum. To Pontypridd is a personal exploration of connection, place, and identity—told through the image of a postcard. It is both a tribute and a conversation about how we see a place, become present in it, and express gratitude. As an international student who came here alone, Pontypridd has become a part of me.

This project reflects moments of presence—for locals reconnecting with the familiar place, and for others, like me, who have grown to feel at home. From familiarity to gratitude, from adapting to belonging. The piece includes a large postcard I created, surrounded by postcards made by the people of Pontypridd. An audio description is included, featuring the voices behind them. The audience is invited to make a postcard response to: What is Pontypridd to you?
