EUGENIA TAYLOR

Artist Statement

I am a queer multidisciplinary Community Artist working across visual arts, movement, theatre, film and make-up to explore methods of storytelling, self-expression, and connection with others. My practice is deeply rooted in collaboration and inclusion drawing inspiration directly from the communities I work with. I believe in the transformative power of creativity to foster well-being, empower individuals, and combat feelings of loneliness. Underpinning my work is a person-centred approach, imbued with empathy, while striving to be a better member of society. I aim to empower others to find their voice, connect with their inner world, and cultivate a sense of belonging through art.

This project grew from a personal need for connection. During a period of isolation and feeling misunderstood, I carried a deep sadness about wider global injustices. I reached out to the queer community in Pontypridd to explore protest and community through participation in workshops. We created banners and placards, using textiles, painting, stencilling, and collage. We reflected and meditated on how protest can begin within, through radical self-love and collective support. The project culminated in a short film blending poetry, expressive makeup, and stop motion editing, in celebration of the community, its resilience, and creativity. Participants’ banners and placards are displayed either side of the film screen, highlighting their personal passions and voices. The poem weaves together my own words with those of the participants, gathered through interviews, artworks, and feedback. The makeup design embodies the rolling hills and houses of the South Wales valleys and the powerful relationships made within the Pontypridd queer community. Who also highlighted the need for more queer, safe and creative spaces in Pontypridd. I am deeply grateful to local musician Nate Orr for composing the musical track featured in the film, Parc Arts, Y Muni, and to all the participants and contributors. This project could not have happened without them.
