Artist Statement

Jessica Hamer-Mathew - Whackkyfrogg

I am an artist and facilitator based in South Wales who works in a variety of media, embracing the materials I can source sustainably and allowing for a process-lead approach. Inspired by the principles of Forest Schools, I embrace working outdoors whenever possible because of its focus on creative exploration and managed risk taking. From my experiences of working primarily with children and young people, I am drawn to playful and explorative approaches. Similarly to how the working with children and in outdoor spaces can be unpredictable and require flexibility as a facilitator, my own arts practise which forms as the result of mixing less traditional mixed media with painting or crochet. My explorations enable me to create tactile and enticing artwork which typically radiates whimsical energy, using a variety of bright colours to create a soft and welcoming aesthetic. This often includes the portrayal of friendly creatures and characters throughout my work.

Over the last few months, I have embedded my arts practise in exploring my interest in mythical and magical creatures. I have been inspired by stories of Welsh folklore, particularly those within The Mabinogion. With the influence of the Pontypridd community, I wanted to reimagine these stories in a local context. This project reflects the town and its people. These costumes have been inspired by the facilitation of the ‘Fairies, Dragons and Kings Workshop’ at YMa, providing a creative space for people to get involved. Additionally, there is a collection of drawing submissions from the local community. This installation includes a fairy costume, a dragon costume and a large collaboratively created banner. This artwork combines elements of sewing and crochet. As well as working with repurposed and sustainably sourced materials that drove elements of these creations. Finally, a special thank you to YMa for their support with this project.
